SECRETS REVEALED

Okay, guys, the time has come… For two months I’ve had to keep the BIGGEST, BEST, MOST EXCITING, MOST INCREDIBLE SECRET ABOUT SAVE THE KALES! EVERRRRR under wraps…

But tomorrow, Friday March 30th 2012, all will be revealed. Check back!

And I’m incredibly flattered and humbled to tell you that the blog awards just ended an hour ago, and Save the Kales! won Best Food Blog — AND, holy gosh, Best Overall Blog.

Save the Kales! Best of Blogs contest

Our community is full of people doing incredibly creative things with passion and drive and a desire to show that what we do and say DOES matter, our actions CAN make a difference in our communities, and if you’re lucky enough (I am; we are) you make great friends along the way.

I am incredibly thankful. My vocabulary isn’t advanced enough to tell you how much it means to me. With a full heart, thank you.

Help STK! Win a Local Blog Contest

EDIT; March 30th: I won! Thank you!

Disclaimer: contests give me anxiety anyway, and it’s always strange when the winners are selected based on how many people use the internet (feels like a high school popularity contest in a way… I don’t know). But I guess that’s how we do things in the magical technological age, and I’m proud that Save the Kales! was nominated in the contest held by the local newspaper.

I cross my heart and swear this isn’t about an ego boost. I truly love the idea of a vegan blog winning the FOOD category, for many reasons which are obvious, but especially because it means the values I try to share here — living with compassion, community involvement, making vegan foods not “scary” and instead accessible, showing all the good food you can eat in restaurants in our area — those are the things that can reach a larger audience.

So! If you’d like to vote (especially if it’s for Save the Kales! in FOOD, and I thank you for that support!), you can click the link here: BLOG CONTEST VOTING

.

*Note that a blog can only win ONE category, and I’d like STK! win for FOOD so your votes for the Health & Wellness category can go to someone else.

(I recommend the blog Johnnysized — it’s an incredible documentation of a local man, totally the bravest and most admirable guy, who needed to get his health under control and he began a plant based vegan diet. He is the COOLEST PERSON, already lost over 50 pounds and is off several medications, and I’d love to see him win in Health and Wellness.)

You can sign in via Facebook instead of registering an account, place your votes, and it takes about five seconds.

ALSO: You can vote once every 24 hour period! The contest goes another 2-3 weeks, so go crazy.

THANK YOU X’S A MILLION! xoxo

BEST FOOD BLOG: Save the Kales!

It’s a good day when the local paper holds a blog contest, open to the ENTIRE POPULATION of blog writers in the area, and the food winner is a VEGAN blog. I like it. As much as I like sauerkraut, I’m hoping some of the unhealthier Pennsylvnia Dutch recipes this area is built on could get a little revamped (perhaps I can take this on as a spring project!?)

It’s especially fun since the folks at Rodale Press (Organic Gardening Magazine, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, publishers of Alicia Silverstone’s The Kind Diet, etc)… were nominated in the same category. And I won! I love you Rodale, and it’s because I love you so much that I am humbled and even more excited about winning that category!

My other blog, HEART OF STEELcity that shifts the focus from food and my personal life to awesome people, businesses, and events in the Lehigh Valley also won Best NEIGHBORHOOD Blog! Hey now!

Too excited to make a sexy wink, but I give you THIS.

Our blogs be listed on the MorningCall website (which is said to get a new revamp within the next 2 weeks) so we can spread the word a little louder, a little farther. Thank you, everybody, for helping a side-project turned life-business get a little recognition.

I also want to like you to one of my Food category competitors, another vegan blog, http://louzilla.wordpress.com/. Awesome Job! Keep on writing, you make crazy desserts!

Thanks Morning Call, Thanks to all the bloggers who’s creativity and passion shoot from their brains to fingers to computer screens.

CONTESTS, ROAD TRIPS, TURKISH FOOD AND THANK YOUS.

Let’s go in order:

  • 1. Our local newspaper is having a Best Blogs Contest, and Save the Kales! is nominated! (My other blog, HEART OF STEELcity, is also nominated, but more on that in a minute.) There are many blogs in many categories – go, check ’em out, and vote for your favorite. (I’d love it if it happened to be mine, of course, but check ’em all out!)

There are a few corporate blogs thrown in, and while they do awesome things and I mean no disrespect, I’d love to see this contest won by people who write first and formost because they are passionate about what they do, and passionate about contributing to making the Valley great, not just because they make a salary to do so. I’d love to see independent writers get recognition that comes from winning the contest since they aren’t the ones with marketing departments behind them.

A blog can only win one category, so while some of us are nominated for several, I’d love to see your votes go to: a) Save the Kales in FOOD b) and HEART OF STEELcity in NEIGHBORHOOD

Thank you in advance, and best of luck to my friends and fellow bloggers for keeping a caring, DIY vibe to the Lehigh Valley through your observations.

GO HERE TO VOTE (only once a day, but you can do it EVERY day!)

  • 2) Two weekends ago, Ryan and I took an overnight trip to Providence, RI which was essentially a food tour and documentation of said food tour. I’m currently editing a 2-part video full of delicious foods, drinks and excellent establishments that have both. This will come in handy if you every find yourself in Providence, or give you good reason to plan a trip!

Fancy painting of some cows in the hotel lobby. I don't see enough cow art.

Vegan white russians, cheesesteak wraps, mac and cheese, and brownie + ice cream desserts galore. Also a visit to the Culinary Museum at Johnson and Wales University. SO fun!

  • 3) My new blog post at the aforementioned HEART OF STEELcity blog documents our visit to a Turkish restaurant in Allentown. Um, you guys. This has been here forever but it’s new to me and it’s literally MY NEW FAVORITE RESTAURANT. Tons and tons of vegan options.

If you live nearby or visit from out of town, you need to go here, and you need to take me with you. I can’t stop thinking about it. I may write a love letter. Dear baba ghanoush, I like you, do you like me? Check one box.

You can see photos and read about it here:  HEART OF STEELcity

  • 4) Thank you to everyone who reached out after my last post about my father’s death and how it lead me to a veg-diet. Your posted comments and personal messages directly sent to me have shown, once again, how lucky I am to have the kindest folks in the world supporting me and you are all a testament to the kindness of people, the good in all hearts. I reflect on your words in times of sadness, and then feel brighter and better when I think about them, and you. Thank you. So much.
